Neglect can be harder to spot in a home care setting than in a residential one, simply because there are fewer people around to notice a pattern over time. Workers who visit regularly are often the first to see the small signs build up.
Physical signs to watch for include unexplained weight loss, poor personal hygiene that is out of character, pressure sores, and untreated medical conditions. Behavioural signs can include withdrawal, anxiety around a particular person, or a sudden change in how someone talks about their situation. Environmental signs – an unheated home, spoiled food, or unfilled prescriptions – matter just as much as anything said directly.
If you notice any of these signs, follow your organisation’s safeguarding policy and raise a concern promptly rather than waiting to be certain – it is always the safeguarding lead’s job to decide what happens next, not the worker who spotted it.
