The Level 3 Managing and Facilitating Medication in Care for Non-Medical Professionals is an endorsed qualification designed for staff who have responsibility for managing medication within their care setting. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely oversee medication processes, support colleagues in administering medicines, and ensure compliance with current legislation and best practice guidance.
This qualification is ideal for senior care workers, team leaders, and managers in residential, domiciliary, supported living, and day centre settings who need to go beyond basic medication awareness and take on a coordinating or facilitating role. It covers the legislation governing medicines in care, safe handling and storage, administration routes and methods, recording and reporting, medication errors and near misses, controlled drugs, and the management of medication within the wider care service.

Understanding the legal framework governing medicines in care settings, including the Medicines Act 1968, Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the Health and Social Care Act 2008, and CQC requirements for medicines management.
Receiving, storing, and disposing of medicines safely. Temperature control and monitoring for refrigerated medicines. Safe disposal of expired or unwanted medication, including sharps and cytotoxic waste.
Understanding the different routes of medication administration: oral, topical, inhaled, transdermal, ocular, aural, and rectal. The principles of safe administration, including the six rights of medication administration.
Accurate completion of Medication Administration Records (MARs). Recording administered, refused, omitted, and PRN (as required) medicines. Reporting adverse reactions, side effects, and interactions.
Recognising and responding to medication errors. Understanding the causes of errors, implementing preventative measures, and following the correct reporting procedures including CQC notification requirements.
Understanding the regulations specific to controlled drugs in care settings. Storage requirements, record keeping, witnessing, and disposal. The role of the controlled drugs accountable officer and the controlled drugs register.
The role of the medication lead in a non-medical care setting. Training and supporting colleagues, monitoring compliance, conducting medication audits, and driving continuous improvement in medicines management.
