Level 3 Award in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities

This course is grounded in two real, converging UK Level 3 qualifications: the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities and the OCN NI Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities, both built around the same core content — understanding the genuine context of learning disability, effective communication, positive risk-taking, and mental well-being and mental health.

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability, and I want to be genuinely direct from the outset about something this whole course returns to repeatedly: a learning disability is not an illness, and it is not something to be fixed or cured — it is a lifelong difference in how a person learns, understands information and communicates, present from childhood, and every individual with a learning disability has exactly the same right to a genuinely good life, real choices, and to be treated with dignity and respect as anyone else.

Written for registered managers and staff across Supported Living, Domiciliary Care and Ambulance Services, and genuinely complementary to the Level 3 Award in Working with Autistic Individuals course elsewhere in this series, since learning disability and autism are related but genuinely distinct conditions, this course covers across eighteen lessons what learning disability genuinely is, the distinction from learning difficulty and autism, the history and language of this field, the legal and policy framework, effective and total communication, person-centred support and reasonable adjustments, positive risk-taking, mental well-being and mental health (including the genuine, serious problem of diagnostic overshadowing), health inequalities, safeguarding, supporting independence and community inclusion, and transitions across the lifespan, with examples throughout from each of the three service types.
