Level 3 Award in Promoting Positive Behaviour

14 September 2026 · admin · 2 min read

This course is built around the widely used Level 3 “Promoting Positive Behaviour” unit structure found across several adult social care qualifications, covering seven core learning outcomes: the legal and policy framework underpinning positive behaviour support, proactive and reactive strategies, the use of restrictive interventions, promoting positive behaviour in everyday practice, responding appropriately to incidents, supporting individuals and others afterwards, and reviewing and revising approaches over time.

Positive behavioural support, or PBS, represents a genuine shift away from older, purely reactive, control-focused approaches toward understanding what a behaviour communicates, addressing the genuine underlying reasons behind it, and building proactive, person-centred strategies that reduce distress before it ever reaches crisis point. Evidence consistently shows that behaviour that challenges services reduces when individuals actively participate in planning their own care, and this course is built throughout around that genuine, evidence-based principle.

Written for registered managers and staff across Supported Living, Domiciliary Care and Ambulance Services, and complementary to the Level 3 Award in Working with Autistic Individuals course elsewhere in this series, since positive behaviour support principles apply broadly across adult social care, not only to autistic individuals, this course covers across eighteen lessons the legal framework, factors affecting behaviour, proactive and reactive strategies, identifying patterns and triggers, person-centred behaviour support planning, promoting positive behaviour day to day, the ABC model, types of challenging behaviour, responding to incidents with dignity, restrictive interventions and their safeguards, learning from Winterbourne View, accurate recording, supporting individuals and others afterwards, and reviewing and revising approaches, with examples throughout from each of the three service types.
