Level 3 Award for Manual Handling Trainers

Moving and handling training appears throughout this series — covered from the induction angle in the Care Certificate course, and from the ongoing refresher angle in the Statutory and Mandatory Training course. This course is different again: it is for the registered manager, senior carer or in-house trainer who wants to become the person actually qualified to teach and assess manual handling within their own organisation, rather than relying on an external provider for every session.

It maps onto a combined qualification pathway offered by training providers across the sector: the Level 3 Award for Moving and Handling Care Trainers itself (the core, sector-specific competency award), the Level 2 Award in Moving and Handling in Health and Social Care (the underpinning knowledge of safe principles, risk assessment and legislation), the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and the Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment — the same two general teaching and assessment qualifications covered in the Level 3 Award for Health and Social Care Trainers course elsewhere in this series. Together, these four regulated qualifications give someone the recognised competency to plan, deliver and assess manual handling training in a real workplace, typically through a portfolio of evidence, a micro-teach session, and a genuine teaching observation.

Written for registered managers, senior carers and anyone stepping into a manual handling trainer role, across eighteen lessons we cover the Manual Handling Operations Regulations and HSE guidance, biomechanics and anatomy, risk assessment using the TILEO framework, safe handling technique, hoists and slings, slide sheets and transfer boards, person-centred handling, the trainer’s role, inclusive teaching, session planning and delivery, the micro-teach, assessing competency, equipment safety, incident reporting, and applying all of this across Supported Living, Domiciliary Care and Ambulance Services.
