This course is grounded directly in Skills for Care’s official guide, “Effective supervision: a practical guide for adult social care managers and supervisors” (2025), and in Regulation 18 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, which requires that staff receive the support, training, professional development, supervision and appraisals necessary for their role.
Your workforce is your most valuable resource, and effective supervision plays a genuinely key role in supporting them to deliver high-quality care. Supervision is not about the exercise of power over another person — whilst it can help manage performance, it is equally, and just as importantly, a way of helping the person being supervised to develop new skills, experience and genuine confidence in their role. Ineffective supervision, by contrast, can reduce productivity, increase absenteeism, create or prolong workplace conflict, and genuinely damage the quality of care a service provides.
Written for registered managers, deputies, team leaders and anyone who supervises others across Supported Living, Domiciliary Care and Ambulance Services, this course covers across eighteen lessons what supervision genuinely is, why it matters, its three core functions (supportive, line management, and educational/developmental), who can carry it out, the attributes of a genuinely good supervisor, preparing for and structuring a session, active listening and effective questioning, giving and receiving constructive feedback, supervision during induction, supporting new and inexperienced staff, performance management, reflective supervision, power imbalance and equal participation, the genuine warning signs of ineffective supervision, group and informal supervision, and developing supervisors across each of the three service types.
Whether you're preparing for an inspection, developing your team, or starting a new care business, we're here to help.
