Effective Communication

14 September 2026 · admin · 2 min read

This course is grounded directly in Care Certificate Standard 6 (Communication) and its six learning outcomes, and in the “6Cs” that underpin all UK health and social care practice: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment.

Good communication is not a soft skill sitting alongside the genuinely important work of care — it is the genuinely essential foundation that everything else in care depends on. Most communication is silent: tone of voice, facial expression, body position, gesture and timing very often tell a person far more than the words themselves, and understanding this reshapes how any genuinely good care worker approaches every single interaction, not only the formally significant ones.

Written for registered managers and staff across Supported Living, Domiciliary Care and Ambulance Services, and genuinely complementary to the Care Certificate course elsewhere in this series, which covers Standard 6 briefly as one of sixteen standards, this course goes into dedicated, practical depth across eighteen lessons: verbal and non-verbal communication, written communication and records, communication aids and alternative methods (British Sign Language, Makaton, Braille and technology), understanding individual communication needs and preferences, communication passports, the genuinely wide range of communication barriers and how to reduce them, checking understanding, confidentiality and data protection, when confidentiality must be broken, communicating with families and other professionals, difficult conversations, multidisciplinary and handover communication, and communication across each of the three service types.
