The Level 3 Award for Manual Handling Trainers is designed for individuals who want to teach and assess manual handling training within their own organisation. Whether you are a registered manager, senior carer, or in-house trainer, this qualification gives you the regulated competency to deliver safe, compliant manual handling training that meets CQC and HSE expectations.

You will develop inclusive teaching strategies underpinned by safe manual handling principles and risk assessment, gaining the confidence to deliver sessions on moving and handling people, safe handling techniques, and risk reduction in care environments.

Qualifications Awarded

Four regulated qualifications included in one course.

Level 3 Award for Moving and Handling Care Trainers

The core qualification. Demonstrates your competency to plan, deliver, and assess manual handling training for the movement of people in a real workplace environment.

Level 2 Award in Moving and Handling in Health and Social Care

Provides the underpinning knowledge of safe moving and handling principles, risk assessment, and the legislation governing manual handling in care settings.

Level 3 Award in Education and Training

A nationally recognised teaching qualification. Covers roles, responsibilities, inclusive teaching strategies, and assessment in education and training.

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

Gives you the knowledge and skills to assess learner competency fairly and consistently, supporting quality assurance in your training delivery.

All qualifications are regulated by an Ofqual-recognised awarding body. Registration and certification fees are included in the course price.

Safe Manual Handling Principles

  • Legislation and Guidance: understanding the Manual Handling Operations Regulations, HSE guidance, and CQC expectations for moving and handling in care settings.
  • Biomechanics and Anatomy: understanding how the spine and musculoskeletal system work, and how poor handling techniques lead to injury.
  • Risk Assessment: conducting manual handling risk assessments, identifying hazards, and implementing control measures to reduce risk.
  • Safe Handling Techniques: demonstrating and teaching safe techniques for moving and handling people, including the use of hoists, slings, transfer boards, and other handling aids.

Teaching and Assessing Manual Handling

  • Inclusive Teaching Strategies: planning and delivering manual handling training that meets diverse learning needs and abilities.
  • Practical Demonstration: teaching safe handling techniques in a real workplace environment, including correct use of equipment.
  • Assessing Competency: using observation, questioning, and practical assessment to confirm learners can apply safe handling techniques safely.
  • Evaluating Training: reviewing session effectiveness, gathering learner feedback, and making improvements to your delivery.

Embedding Safety and Compliance

  • Person-Centred Handling: planning handling that respects the dignity, preferences, and independence of the person being supported.
  • Equipment Safety: ensuring safe use, maintenance, and checking of handling equipment, including hoists, stand aids, and slide sheets.
  • Incident Reporting: understanding how to report handling-related incidents, near misses, and injuries in line with organisational and regulatory requirements.

Face to Face Training

Attend in-person sessions at our Cheadle training centre or arrange for us to deliver at your premises. Ideal for groups and organisations wanting a hands-on classroom experience with practical handling equipment.

Online with Zoom Observation

Complete the theory component online at your own pace, then progress to a live teaching observation via Zoom. You will need a laptop or tablet with camera and audio, positioned to capture your training delivery within a real workplace environment.

Blended Learning

Combine online theory with selected in-person workshop days. Flexible for those balancing shifts and study.

Assessment and Observation Requirements

Practical delivery evaluation in a real workplace environment.

Teaching Observation

Regardless of your chosen delivery method, all learners must complete a teaching observation. For online learners, this takes place via video conferencing (Zoom) with you positioned to capture your training delivery within a real workplace environment. For face-to-face learners, the observation is carried out in person at our centre or your premises.

Portfolio of Evidence

You will build a portfolio of evidence throughout the course, including session plans, learning resources, assessment records, and reflective accounts. Your assessor will guide you through each stage and provide feedback to support your progression.

Micro-Teach Session

As part of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, you will deliver a short micro-teach session to demonstrate your teaching skills. This can be delivered face to face or online via Zoom.
