The national standard for care worker induction, covering all 16 standards to ensure new staff are safe, skilled, and ready to deliver quality care.
The Care Certificate is the recognised national standard for induction of new health and social care workers. Developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England, and Skills for Health, it covers 16 standards that ensure staff are safe to practice and have the right knowledge, skills, and behaviours to provide high-quality, compassionate care.
The Care Certificate is grounded in the social model of care and human rights-based practice. Throughout the standards, we embed strength-based, person-centred approaches that ensure new staff see the individual, not just the task, and understand the rights and choices that underpin compassionate care.
All 16 standards are covered, including the new Standard 16: Awareness of Learning Disability and Autism, added in March 2025.

Creating a personal development plan, agreeing learning objectives, and understanding your duty of care, including recognising and resolving dilemmas.
Promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in your work; working in a person-centred way that respects individual preferences, needs, and choices.
Effective verbal and non-verbal communication, maintaining privacy and dignity, and supporting individuals with food, hydration, and nutrition according to their care plan.
Understanding the needs and experiences of people with mental health conditions, dementia, and learning disabilities; promoting positive attitudes and person-centred support.
Recognising signs of harm, abuse, and neglect in adults and children; understanding how to respond, report, and reduce the risk of safeguarding incidents.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), recovery position, and emergency response; adapted to adult, paediatric, or newborn contexts depending on your role.
Risk assessments, safe working practices, fire safety, and hazardous substances; recording, storing, and sharing information securely; and infection prevention and control measures.
Understanding the needs and experiences of autistic people and people with a learning disability; promoting positive attitudes, reasonable adjustments, and the importance of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.
