What is Oliver McGowan Training?
Our Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training aims to equip health and social care staff with the knowledge and expertise necessary to provide person-centred support to autistic and individuals with learning disabilities. The Oliver McGowan Training consists of two parts: Tier One (theory) and Tier Two (one-day practical).
The training is named in honour of Oliver McGowan, who lost his life due to multiple failures to understand his needs when he sought medical help. The aim is to raise awareness, understanding, protect the rights and improve the quality of services to autistic individuals and individuals with learning disabilities.
Who needs Oliver McGowan Training?
The training is not aimed at just care workers. It also applies to others, such as admin workers. Our trainers are Tier 2 approved and deliver training in line with OMT standards. All training we deliver will be hosted with co-trainers with lived experience of autism and learning disabilities.
Is Oliver McGowan Training Mandatory?
The training is now compulsory for all health and social care workers, as mandated by the Health and Social Care Act 2022. Tier 1 is tailored for everyone, while Tier 2 is intended for practitioners who work directly with autistic individuals and people with learning disabilities. The course aims to improve healthcare professionals' skills, boosting their competence, sensitivity, awareness, and understanding of the specific needs, challenges, and experiences of individuals with autism and learning disabilities. Our Oliver Magowan mandatory training aims to promote empathetic care and assist care providers in delivering more personalised support that upholds the dignity and integrity of every individual.
How often does Oliver McGowan Training need to be completed, and is there an expiry date?
Currently, the tier 1 or 2 certificates you receive do not display an end date or expiry for your Oliver McGowan certificate. There is no validity period for Oliver McGowan’s learning certificates. However, it is recommended that you complete the training biannually, every two years, to allow you the opportunity to refresh and stay updated with legislation, emerging technology, and evidence-based practice.

All our training will be facilitated and delivered with co-trainers who have lived experience of autism and learning disabilities.
Our training will help you analyse case scenarios that show the real challenges of delivering person-centred care to autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities. It aims to provide useful resources and tips, going beyond generic methods by genuinely learning from individuals with lived experience, challenging unconscious bias, labels, misconceptions, and exploring the impact of language. For example, the use of words such as "challenging behaviour". Challenging to whom? What if an individual is distressed or responding to a sensory issue, which to an untrained eye might seem challenging?
We are a training provider committed to transforming your approach using relatable, practical examples when supporting autistic individuals and those diagnosed with learning disabilities in a safe and effective way.
We are flexible with our Oliver McGowan delivery and training dates. We can travel to any location within the United Kingdom for group bookings. We also offer weekend course sessions.
